Lesson #7 - The Five Finger Scale

Practice Routine

Try to practice 4-6 days a week for at least 15-25 minutes. Even if you are away from the piano you can visualize the keyboard in your mind and practice while on the go. Take notes along with you to review while away from the piano.

Here is what you should practice this week:

  1. C Major 5-finger scale with grab technique with right-hand (5 min)
  2. C Major 5-finger scale with grab technique with left-hand (5 min)
  3. C Major 5-finger scale with grab technique hands together (10 min)

I have a question: When playing this scale, or any other for that matter, is it okay to lift the other fingers, while playing a note, or is that creating a ‘bad habit’? Fx. when playing the E-note with the 3rd finger, I have problems with keeping my 4th finger on the key.

I noticed that you lift your fingers a bit, but I wanted to make sure.

Yes, but be careful not to lift them too high. As time goes on, you will learn to keep them down, so for now don’t worry too much about lifting right now.
